Nicholas Hytner has yet another accolade to add to his highly decorated mantelpiece after being awarded the Critics’ Circle Award for Services to the Arts.
The Former National Theatre Director, who picked up a Special Award alongside Nick Starr at the Olivier Awards with MasterCard earlier this year, was presented with the prestigious prize at a celebratory lunch at the National Liberal Club yesterday.
On receiving his award, Hynter said: “By rights I should be accepting it in partnership with Nick Starr, and I am delighted he is here today. I hope that sometime in the future – maybe 25 years from now – we might get one jointly!”
The director’s latest accolade comes following the announcement earlier this summer that he will again join forces with former NT Executive Director Starr to open a new 900-seat theatre overlooking Tower Bridge as part of their new London Theatre Company.
The award for Services to the Arts is the Critics’ Circle’s highest honour and since its inauguration in 1988 has been given to a long list of deserving recipients including Hytner’s NT predecessors Peter Hall and Richard Eyre, and Olivier Award-winning actresses Judi Dench and Helen Mirren.
The Critics’ Circle’s most recent prize-giving news follows today’s announcement that the UK’s most prestigious theatre awards, the Olivier Awards with MasterCard, will take place on 3 April at the capital’s iconic Royal Opera House. Read the full story here.
