From 4 June there will be new faces on the street inhabited by puppets, Avenue Q, as Delroy Atkinson and Mary Doherty join the cast.
Atkinson, who plays the part of real-life US child star Gary Coleman, replacing Giles Terera, has London stage credits including The Harder They Come, Jerry Springer The Opera and Five Guys Named Moe. Doherty, who takes over from Clare Foster to play puppet headmistress Mrs Thistletwat and other parts, recently appeared in the RSC production Merry Wives: The Musical in Stratford.
The new cast members join original Avenue Q residents Jon Robyns, Simon Lipkin and Julie Atherton – who between them play puppets Princeton, Kate Monster, Nicky, Rod, Trekkie Monster and Lucy The Slut – and Siôn Lloyd as their neighbour Brian; plus Jennifer Tanarez, who has been playing Christmas Eve since April.
It is nearly a year since the West End premiere of Avenue Q, the Broadway hit that came to London and picked up a 2007 Laurence Olivier Award nomination. Billed as a cross between Sesame Street and South Park, the story follows college graduate Princeton as he struggles to find his way in life. Renting a room on Avenue Q, the friends and neighbours he meets help him sort out a few important matters, through songs such as Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist and The Internet Is For Porn.
On 28 June the cast celebrates a year in the West End with a birthday show which promises “surprises and puppet-style fun”.
Avenue Q is booking until 31 January 2008. To book tickets click here.
