Treasure Island will join the growing list of London shows to stage Sunday performances when it changes its schedule at the Theatre Royal Haymarket next month.
The family-friendly adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic pirate adventure will play 15:00 performances on Sundays, replacing Monday evening performances, from 1 December.
The show’s producers have taken the decision to change the schedule “in response to a large demand from parents wanting to take their children to see this new adaptation,” according to a statement.
Ken Ludwig’s version of the classic swashbuckling tale is directed by Sean Holmes and stars Keith Allen – best known for playing the Sheriff of Nottingham in the BBC adaptation of Robin Hood – as peg-legged pirate cook Long John Silver.
The story follows young Jim Hawkins, who finds himself in possession of a map showing the location of lost treasure. With a crew of hired scoundrels, including the suspicious-looking ship’s cook Long John Silver, he embarks on a perilous journey on the high seas in the hope of recovering the treasure.
Treasure Island is the latest show to stage Sunday performances in what is becoming a trend in the West End and beyond. The shows Stomp and The Lion King have long held performances on Sundays, but they have been joined recently by La Clique at the Hippodrome, Brief Encounter at the Cinema Haymarket – which ends its run this Sunday – and Ivanov at the Wyndham’s theatre. The National Theatre has also recently introduced Sunday performances for some of its shows, including family show War Horse and classic adaptation Oedipus.
