Hampstead’s Gray quartet transfers

Published 27 March 2014

Tamara Harvey’s production of Simon Gray’s cycle In The Vale Of Health will transfer to the Hampstead Theatre’s main stage following its current run in the venue’s intimate Downstairs space.

Following demand for tickets for its limited nine week season running until 20 May in the acclaimed theatre’s studio, Harvey’s innovative and ambitious staging of Gray’s interlinked quartet of plays will head upstairs for a three week run from 28 May to 14 June.

Comprising Gray’s plays Japes, Michael, Japes Too and Missing Dates, each of the four dramas are based on the same three characters – orphaned brothers Michael and Japes, and their mutual love Anita – in the same situation, but all tell a different story with opposite conclusions.

Performed in rep, the company is currently developing and rehearsing the plays by day and performing by night. With the first two plays already having opened, the third, Japes Too, is set to open on 18 April before Missing Dates concludes the cycle from 13 May.

The production’s current cast, including Games Of Thrones’ Gethin Anthony, NT regular Jamie Ballard, Gastronauts Imogen Doel and Lewis star Laura Rees, will continue in their roles when the show transfers to the Hampstead Theatre’s larger space.
