Wonderland at the Hampstead Theatre

Hampstead Theatre welcomes Wonderland

First Published 14 April 2014, Last Updated 14 April 2014

Edward Hall will direct the world premiere of Beth Steel’s epic drama Wonderland at the Hampstead Theatre this summer.

The play, which was one of the 10 finalists for this year’s Susan Smith Blackburn Prize for Best New Play, will run at the Swiss Cottage venue from 20 June (press night 26 June) to 26 July.

Set during the 1984 mining strikes, Wonderland explores the clash between the mining community and Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative government by juxtaposing the stories of two lads as they enter the mines for the first time with that of a Tory MP and an American CEO who are about to do battle with the most powerful of workforces.

Staged in the 30th anniversary year of the protests, the production will be directed by the Hampstead Theatre’s Artistic Director and feature lighting design by 2014 Olivier Award nominee Peter Mumford.

Wonderland will open at the Hampstead Theatre following Sunny Afternoon, the forthcoming new musical featuring songs by The Kinks, which plays from 14 April to 24 May.
