Rupert Goold’s production of Enron, a new play by Lucy Prebble about the infamous financial scandal, will run at the Royal Court in September following its premiere at Chichester Festival Theatre.
Prebble’s play, which runs in the Royal Court’s Jerwood Theatre Downstairs from 17 September to 31 October (press night 22 September), is based on the scandal surrounding the fraudulent activities of American company Enron which culminated in bankruptcy in 2001. Using music, movement and video, Enron reviews the tumultuous 1990s and casts a new light on the financial turmoil in which the world finds itself today.
Enron is a co-production between Chichester Festival Theatre, where it premieres in July, and Headlong theatre, of which Goold is Artistic Director. Though he makes his Royal Court debut with Enron, Goold has worked prolifically in London in recent years. His production of No Man’s Land had a season at the Duke of York’s theatre which ended in January, King Lear is currently playing at the Young Vic, while Oliver! inhabits the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. His previous productions at Chichester – Macbeth and Six Characters In Search Of An Author – both transferred to the West End, with Macbeth winning several Laurence Olivier Awards last year including Best Director. Goold’s other credits include The Last Days Of Judas Iscariot at the Almeida theatre, The Tempest and The Glass Menagerie in the West End.
Playwright Prebble’s debut play The Sugar Syndrome premiered at the Royal Court in 2003, earning her the George Devine Award and the Critics’ Circle Award for Most Promising Playwright.
No casting has yet been announced for Enron.
The production follows a season in the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs that includes Mark Ravenhill’s Over There, two plays by Wallace Shawn and Jez Butterworth’s Jerusalem.
