God In Ruins is Neilson’s new play

First Published 17 April 2008, Last Updated 18 April 2008

More details have been revealed about the new play written and directed by Anthony Neilson which will premiere at the Soho in December. God In Ruins, which was previously untitled, is described as a macabre, funny and seasonally disturbing play created by Neilson with 11 male actors from the Royal Shakespeare Company, which commissioned the piece.

God In Ruins, which runs at the Soho from 29 November-5 January (press night 5 December), includes elements of Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol and centres on the story of a father who is trying to communicate with his daughter. Touching on the theme of online technology, it looks at the modern phenomenon of men who recreate themselves in virtual worlds like Second Life, becoming gods in their own bedrooms.

Neilson directs a cast comprising Jude Akuwudike, Richard Atwill, Thane Bettany, Sam Cox, Brian Doherty, Ryan Gage, Emmanuel Ighodaro, Jason Nwoga, Patrick O’Kane, Mark Theodore and Joel Trill. The playwright also directed his own play The Wonderful World Of Dissocia at the Royal Court earlier this year.

God In Ruins is one of three new plays commissioned by the RSC for London audiences. Leo Butler’s I’ll Be The Devil and Roy Williams’s Days Of Significance open at the Tricycle in spring next year.
