On stage, off stage, behind the scenes, in the wings; images of the groundbreaking Globe To Globe festival were snapped throughout the iconic theatre and are now on display at the Bankside venue.
The festival, staged earlier this year, saw more than 600 actors from 37 different countries perform all 37 of Shakespeare’s plays in 37 different languages to a combined audience of more than 85,000 theatregoers.
Five photographers – Simon Annand, Marc Brenner, John Haynes, Simon Kane and Ellie Kurttz – were given unprecedented access to the performers during the season, infiltrating dressing rooms, rehearsals, warm-ups, media calls and private ceremonies to capture both the daily goings on of this incredible international festival and the breadth of theatrical performance.
Speaking about the Globe To Globe: The Festival In Focus exhibition, Dominic Dromgoole, Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe, said: “The Globe is about people, about actors and audiences. It is theatre at its simplest – one group of people telling a story about another group of people to another group of people. And it is these people who are so wonderfully caught in these pictures, faces, bodies and groups of bodies, all caught in the articulate whirl of storytelling.”
