Gemma Arterton will star in Bernard Shaw’s Saint Joan, as part of the new Donmar Warehouse season announced today.
Donmar Artistic Director Josie Rourke will direct Arterton in a revival of Shaw’s play about the trial and death of Joan of Arc this December. Rourke commented “I am thrilled to be directing Gemma Arterton, one of our most luminous and compelling stage actors, in Bernard Shaw’s St Joan. The play is something I’ve long wanted to stage at the Donmar and I am immensely proud to be presenting a season of work in which female and diverse voices take on great figures of history and great roles from the canon.”
The season’s opening production will be One Night In Miami… by Kemp Powers, a fictional account of a real-life meeting between Cassius Clay, Malcolm X, Sam Cooke and Jim Brown in 1964. The play will be directed by Kwame Kwei-Armah, an award-winning playwright, actor and broadcaster, currently Artistic Director of Centre Stage in Baltimore, Maryland.
These productions run alongside the previously announced Donmar Shakespeare Trilogy at King’s Cross; three iconic Shakespeare plays performed by an entirely female cast.
Faith Healer, starring Ron Cook and Gina McKee, is currently running at the Donmar Warehouse until 30 August. For more information and to book tickets, visit the official website.
