The Menier Chocolate Factory’s highly acclaimed production of Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music is to transfer to the Garrick theatre this spring.
The show, which runs at the intimate London Bridge venue until 8 March, opens in the West End on 7 April (following previews from 28 March), and is booking until 25 July.
Directed by Trevor Nunn, A Little Night Music is set in turn-of-the-century Sweden where affairs of the heart are uppermost in the thoughts of four linked couples. Its score, set in waltz time, includes the famous song Send In The Clowns.
A Little Night Music’s cast is packed with West End experience. Hannah Waddingham (Desiree Armfeldt) is the original Lady of the Lake from the London production of Monty Python’s Spamalot and has also appeared in The Beautiful Game and Tonight’s The Night.
Alexander Hanson (Fredrik Egerman) is a 2009 Laurence Olivier Award nominee, picking up the nomination for his performance in Marguerite at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. His previous credits also include The Sound Of Music, Candide and Sunset Boulevard.
Maureen Lipman (Madame Armfeldt), who started her career with Laurence Olivier’s Company at the Old Vic, has a wealth of credits including Thoroughly Modern Millie, Oklahoma! and Glorious.
The career of Kelly Price (Countess Charlotte Malcolm) has skyrocketed in recent years, as she has taken leading roles in Chicago, Guys And Dolls and Desperately Seeking Susan, while Jessie Buckley’s (Anne Egerman) career is just beginning. She made her professional debut in A Little Night Music, having finished a runner-up in the televised search for a Nancy, I’d Do Anything.
Also among the cast are John Addison, Laura Armstrong, Lynden Edwards, Kaisa Hammarlund, Alistair Robins, Nicola Sloane and Gabriel Vick. Young performers Holly Hallam and Grace Link share the role of Fredrika Armfeldt.
A Little Night Music is the fourth musical to have transferred from the Menier Chocolate Factory to the West End, following Sunday In The Park With George, Little Shop Of Horrors and current hit La Cage Aux Folles, which is nominated for seven prizes at the forthcoming Laurence Olivier Awards.
