Amanda Boxer, Sarah Belcher and Justin Salinger will join Kate Fleetwood when she takes on the infamous title character in the Almeida Theatre’s production of Medea next month.
Rachel Cusk’s adaptation of the gritty Greek tragedy, which is directed by the Almeida Theatre’s Artistic Director Rupert Goold, will play from 25 September to 14 November.
Boxer, Belcher and Salinger will all take to the Almeida Theatre’s stage having previously performed at the venue. Boxer appeared in The Last Days Of Iscariot in 2008, Belcher returns following performances in A Chaste Maid In Cheapside and Ghost Ward, while Salinger’s credits at the venue include Through A Glass Darkly and Dona Rosita.
They are joined in the production by Richard Cant, whose recent credits include the Rory Kinnear-led The Trial at the Young Vic, Charlotte Randle (Deluge, Hampstead Theatre), Michele Austin (The House That Will Not Stand, Tricycle Theatre), Andy De La Tour (Celebration, Almeida Theatre) and Joseph West (God Bless The Child, Royal Court).
Also joining High Society star Fleetwood are Ruth Everett (Tiger Country, Hampstead Theatre), Georgina Lamb (Othello, Shakespeare’s Globe), Lukas Rolfe (A Doll’s House, West End), Emily Mytton (The 39 Steps, West End) and Louis Sayers. Guillarmo Bedward, Sam Smith and Xavier Moras Spencer will make their professional debuts in the production.
Adapted from Euripides’ seminal play, Medea charts the story of a woman whose marriage – not to mention everything else – is falling apart. Testing the limited of revenge and liberty, it cuts to the heart of gender politics and asks what it means to be a woman and a wife.
Medea will open at the Almeida Theatre following the current production of Bakkhai, in which Ben Whishaw and Bertie Carvel lead the cast until 19 September. The third production in the Almeida Theatre’s trilogy of Greek tragedies, it also follows season opener Oresteia, which proved so popular at the Islington venue that it begins a West End run at the Trafalgar Studios from Saturday.
