David Fielder will lead the cast of The Tempest, the Little Angel theatre’s forthcoming collaboration with Royal Shakespeare Company.
The Tempest, which premieres in Stratford before playing at Little Angel theatre from 9 April to 15 May, is a shortened version of Shakespeare’s play and features Little Angel’s trademark puppetry, making it perfect for children and their families.
Fielder, who plays Prospero in Shakespeare’s stormy tale, is a hugely experienced actor whose work for the RSC includes King John, Romeo And Juliet, As You Like It and Richard III. He has also been seen at the National Theatre and Shakespeare’s Globe.
The Tempest, which forms part of Little Angel’s 50th birthday season, is a tale of a magical island ruled by a powerful magician who summons the elements to seek revenge on his brother. Featuring supernatural spirits, young lovers and shipwrecked sailors, the story is “a gift to the imagination and the possibilities of puppetry,” says director Peter Glanville.
Gregory Doran, Chief Associate Director of the RSC, says “I first collaborated with Little Angel on our RSC co-production of Shakespeare’s narrative poem Venus And Adonis in 2004 (revived 2007). Since then we have developed elements of puppetry in all sorts of RSC productions. I am delighted that we are going to be able to collaborate on this production of The Tempest, directed by Peter Glanville, which we workshopped in Stratford. I know a very special imagination will be applied to this most magical of plays and I can’t wait to see the results.”
