The Albany theatre’s Family Sundays kick off this weekend with Yellow Earth Theatre’s Why The Lion Danced.
Taking audiences from Tom’s family Chinese takeaway deep into the mountains of ancient China to tell the story of a village threatened by the dreaded monster Nian, Why The Lion Danced is just one in a whole range of shows for families to enjoy on Sundays at the Deptford venue.
In March, the Albany theatre will welcome Dogs Don’t Do Ballet (10 March), a tale about a dog called Biff who thinks he’s a ballerina, Tom Thumb (17 March), a show about scary ogres, flying houses and a deep dark forest performed entirely on a kitchen table, and My Brother The Robot (24 March), which is brought to the stage by Tall Stories, the company behind hit family show The Gruffalo.
Sensacional, an interactive theatre experience for toddlers, will bring its digital world of ladybirds, flowers, shapes and squiggles to the venue on 21 April, followed by Don’t Let The Pigeons Drive The Bus!, a production full of fun, feathers and plenty of audience participation adapted from the book by Sesame Street’s Mo Willems, on 28 April.
A combination of buzzing bees and disco-dancing divas will hit the Albany theatre’s stage on Sundays in May with We Need Bees (12 May), an imaginative story about a bee called Bertie, and Disco Kids (19 May), which promises an afternoon of terrific tunes, fun and plenty of surprises.
But family fun isn’t exclusively for Sundays, as the Albany theatre has a whole range of shows for the spring season. Bringing Down The Moon, a heart-warming tale of aspiration, adventure and a little bit of mischief, plays from 22 to 24 February, followed by the magical stage adaptation of Polly Dunbar’s Arthur’s Dream Boat, which will fill the Easter holidays with enchanting puppetry from 3 to 7 April.
Packing even more fun into the weekend, Saturdays will welcome The Tinderbox (9 March), a rollercoaster adventure based on the tale by Hans Christian Andersen, Each Peach Pear Plum (11 May), a game of ‘I spy’ for little ones and their families, and Hue Boy (18 May), a tale about learning to stand tall, no matter what your height.
