Itsoseng, which won a Scotsman Fringe First at the Edinburgh Festival earlier this summer, will transfer to London’s Soho theatre from 8 to 27 September.
The play, which is performed by writer Omphile Molusi, has also played sold out seasons at South Africa’s Baxter Theatre and Market Theatre.
Taking its name from the South African township where Molusi was raised, Itsoseng tells of young man Mawilla, who watches both the girl he has loved since childhood descend into prostitution and his township wither, first under the strain of apartheid and then an apathetic government.
Itsoseng is the story of a young man desperate for change but unable to achieve it; balancing comedy and tragedy it explores the effects of changing politics on the townships.
The 24-year-old playwright Molusi was the first recipient of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Brett Goldin Bursary in 2006. The award gave him the opportunity to travel to Stratford Upon Avon to receive classical training. Itsoseng is his fourth play, and will be his first to be staged in London when it opens at the Soho theatre.
