Dreamboats And Petticoats has launched a competition offering budding songwriters the chance to write a new song to be featured in the rock ‘n’ roll musical.
Taking inspiration from the show’s storyline, which is based around a national youth club songwriting talent search, the winner’s song will not only feature nightly in the show but will be included as a bonus track on the show’s soundtrack when it is released in November by Universal Music.
Making up the judging panel are the suitably rock ‘n’ roll 1960s singer-songwriters Graham Gouldman (I’m Not In Love, For Your Love), Don Black (Michael Jackson’s Ben, Born Free) and Neil Sedaka (Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, Is This The Way To Amarillo).
10cc singer Gouldman commented: “This is a great opportunity for us to see what talent is out there and I was drawn to this competition as it’s all about rock ‘n’ roll, which is where I started my career all those years ago.”
Dreamboats And Petticoats opened at the Savoy theatre in 2009 before it moved to its current home at the Playhouse theatre in January 2010. Inspired by the 1960s rock ‘n’ roll compilation album of the same name, the show features classic songs from artists including Roy Orbison, The Shadows, Eddie Cochran and Billy Fury.
Brian Berg, creator of the show, said: “We’ve had so many stars from the era that have seen the show; we thought we would launch a real-life songwriting competition and get them to judge it. We’re looking for the next rock ‘n’ roll sensation – it’s a dream opportunity for any aspiring songwriters. Is there anyone out there that can give us the next Rock Around The Clock? We’ll let our panel decide!”
Any inspiring musical talents should submit an original MP3 track via the show’s website www.dreamboatsandpetticoats.com by 31 March. Entrants must be aged 18 or over.
