Greenwich Theatre’s Alarms and Excursions is a hilarious take on society’s tortuous relationship with modern technology. Written by Michael Frayn, whose astonishing body of work includes the novels The Tin Men (Somerset Maugham Award), Headlong (shortlisted for the Booker Prize) and Spies (winner of the Whitbread Book of the Year), and the plays Noises Off, Benefactors and Copenhagen (winner of both an Evening Standard award and a Tony Award). If you’re into a classical musical Broken Wings is the show for you. A moving show told through a beautiful western meets middle eastern score. A story about your first love containing some incredible talent and powerful singing – all performed in the round at the intimate Charing Cross Theatre. This new musical closes on 26 March.
For those seeking a modern take on a classic, Rose Theatre’s Persuasion is showing until 19 March. Featuring an incredible soundtrack of Frank Ocean, Dua Lipa and Cardi B, Jane Austen’s romantic comedy is riotously reimagined for the twenty-first century.
Another modern adaptation of a traditional story is The Ballad of Maria Marten, closing this week on 19 February. A feminist retelling of the story of Maria Marten and the Red Barn, told through the eyes of Maria and the women who loved her. The production photos are something to behold. Get in quickly for this heart-stopping, magical production.
Rupaul’s Drag Race fans won’t want to miss Death Drop at the Criterion Theatre. Starring Drag Race UK finalist, the hilarious Kitty Scott-Claus, and US Drag Race royalty Jujubee. This hysterical murder mystery was a smash hit during its previous run and is back to slay until the end of April.
Fancy seeing something at the National Theatre? There are three exciting new productions in Show Time sale. Our Generation is the astonishing verbatim play based on five year’s of interviews with young people across the UK. Brought to us by the same writer as London Road, this epic story is showing until 9 April. Andrea Levy’s award-winning novel Small Island returns to the stage until 30 April, showing interweaving stories in a post-war Britain. Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights is reimagined for modern times starring Lucy McCormick and Ash Hunter. Shot through with music and dance, Emma Rice (Bagdad Cafe, Wise Children, Brief Encounter) transforms Brontë’s masterpiece into a passionate, powerful and uniquely theatrical experience.
