Following its quartet of wins at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards last month, the Donmar Warehouse ruled the theatrical roost when the Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers’ Choice Award nominations were announced this afternoon.
Between its own productions, transfers and its season at the Wyndham’s theatre, the Donmar received a total of 18 nominations in the only British theatre awards to be voted for entirely by the theatregoing public.
Also high in the list of nominees were the National Theatre (14), Menier Chocolate Factory (10), Old Vic (8), Royal Shakespeare Company (8), Royal Court (7) and Almeida (7).
Among the performers receiving nominations were Evening Standard winners Margaret Tyzack, Penelope Wilton and Chiwetel Ejiofor, alongside Lindsay Duncan, Adam Godley, Kenneth Branagh, Ian McDiarmid, Kevin Spacey, Jeff Goldblum, Connie Fisher, Elena Roger, Ruthie Henshall, Darius Danesh, Douglas Hodge, Tracie Bennett, Derren Brown, Eddie Izzard, Maria Friedman, Vanessa Redgrave, Kelly Brook and Summer Strallen.
David Tennant’s RSC production of Hamlet also received two nominations, in the categories of Best Regional Production and Theatre Event Of The Year, before it has even opened in London’s West End.
The announcement was made earlier today at a ceremony held at the Hippodrome, currently home to adult cabaret La Clique. The event, whose hosts included Graham Norton, who is to join the cast of camp musical La Cage Aux Folles in new year, featured performances from Carousel’s Lesley Garrett and the cast of Best New Musical nominee Jersey Boys.
The polls are now open at www.whatsonstage.com for theatregoers to choose their winners, to be revealed on 9 February. An Awards Concert will be held on 15 February, when the awards will be presented. They will be the final theatre awards before the prestigious Laurence Olivier Awards, the highlight of the London theatre awards season, are announced on 8 March.
