Dominic Rowan leads Globe’s Measure cast

Mariah Gale, Dominic Rowan and Kurt Egyiawan will star in Shakespeare’s Globe’s forthcoming production of Measure For Measure when the production, directed by Dominic Dromgoole, opens at the Bankside venue this summer.

Playing from 20 June to 17 October, Shakespeare’s exploration of sexual politics and social justice will see Gale, whose London stage credits include the Young Vic’s Three Sisters, take on the role of Isabella.

Rowan, who was last seen on the capital’s stage in the Cherry Orchard at the Young Vic, will play Duke Vincentio, who, in disgust of the immorality in Vienna, announces his withdrawal from public life and leaves his deputy Angelo, played by Egyiawan, in charge.

Egyiawan was last seen at the Globe in the Mark Rylance-led double bill comprising Twelfth Night and Richard III, which later transferred to the West End and Broadway.

Considered one of the Bard’s blackest comedies, Measure For Measure combines injustice, hypocrisy and the challenge of inflexible virtue, as Angela begins a ruthless programme to stamp out sexual licence, condemning Claudio to death in the process and leaving Claudio’s virginal sister Isabella to try to seek mercy for her brother.

Measure For Measure plays as part of the Globe’s Justice And Mercy season, which kicks off on 23 April with The Merchant Of Venice starring Jonathan Pryce and his daughter Phoebe.
