Dolls add Tricycle dates

Published 13 March 2013

The Tricycle theatre’s tale of unlikely drag performers, Paper Dolls, has proved so popular at the Kilburn venue that two extra weeks have been added to its run.

The production, which is based on truth, will now run until 28 April.

Set in Tel Aviv, the show, which is written by Philip Himberg and based on an award-winning documentary by Tomer Heymann, tells the story of a group of Filipino immigrants who spend six days a week employed as care workers for elderly Orthodox Jewish men, but on the seventh are transformed into sassy drag act Paper Dolls.

Writing about the production, Official London Theatre’s Kate Stanbury said the show’s relationships provided a “touching and subtle display of human connection and social acceptance against the tacky glamour of the group’s alternative lives”.

Paper Dolls is the latest hit to be enjoyed by the Tricycle theatre’s Artistic Director Indhu Rubasingham since she replaced Nicolas Kent in the role last year. Her tenure opened with the award-winning new play Red Velvet, while she enjoyed continued success with family show Arabian Nights and comedy One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show. Rubasingham will be hoping the success continues with her second season, which features Frank McGuinness’ new play The Match Box, Alexi Kaye Campbell’s latest piece Bracken Moor, and the debut play by Denton Chikura, The Epic Adventure Of Nhamo The Manyika Warrior And His Sexy Wife Chipo.
