Learn to play the ukulele, join in a 12-hour line dancing marathon or sample the sounds of samba in the Barbican’s Do Something Different Weekend on 8-9 March.
Following last year’s inaugural event, the Do Something Different Weekend returns this year with a range of free and ticketed activities, performances and exhibitions all over the Barbican Centre, aimed at encouraging people of any age to immerse themselves in creativity. This year’s event takes its inspiration from East, a six-day festival (6-11 March) celebrating the cultural offerings of East London, taking place in several venues in the area, including the Barbican.
On 8 March events include Ghost Dance by Lone Twin, in which audiences can spontaneously join in with two blindfolded cowboys as they line-dance from midday to midnight. In the Big Ukulele Bash, participants aged 7+ can join the Kitchen School of Music and the Duke of Uke to learn the basics of the ukulele and then come together for a big performance on stage. On 9 March there will be free performances by East London AfroReggae groups, the chance to join in with the Junk Samba Band and a Global Disco for kids, a dance session celebrating music from all corners of the globe. The weekend also offers makeovers, creative workshops, choral performances and the chance for families to explore the nooks and crannies of the Barbican Centre.
