Hold on to your woolly hats, as the rumours have been confirmed! Disney’s Frozen musical, soon to celebrate its first anniversary on Broadway, is coming to the West End.
In news set to warm everyone’s hearts, Frozen will open the newly refurbished Theatre Royal Drury Lane in Autumn 2020. It’ll be produced by Disney Theatrical Productions and will feature all of Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez’s iconic music and lyrics, including the Academy Award-winning Best Original Song, Let It Go.
Based on the globe-conquering 2013 film of the same name – which became the highest grossing animated film of all time – Frozen the musical is directed by Michael Grandage, and opened on Broadway in March 2018. It was subsequently nominated for the Tony Award for Best Musical last year, and will soon embark on a North American tour, with productions opening in Australia in 2020 and Hamburg in 2021.
More information about Frozen The Musical, including booking details, performance scheduling and casting, will be announced at a later date. Audiences are invited to sign up for priority booking at FrozenTheMusical.co.uk.
The news (ice)caps a spectacular year so far for Frozen fans, as the Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA Award-winning film is set to release its sequel, Frozen 2, in UK cinemas this November.
Michael Grandage said of the news, “Bringing Frozen to the stage has been a gloriously happy journey. We’re all looking forward to getting back in the room together as a creative team, to build our London company and bring Frozen to the West End.”
Thomas Schumacher, President & Producer Disney Theatrical Productions, added, “Michael Grandage has created a production that is as full of heart and joy as it is spectacle. It will be an honour to reopen Andrew Lloyd Webber’s gorgeously refurbished Theatre Royal Drury Lane, one of the crown jewels of London’s West End.”
And writers Anderson-Lopez and Lopez commented, “The power of Frozen comes from the story of two strong, very real women saving their world by leaning in to their deep love for one another. Expanding this story has been an absolute joy. We went deeper and discovered several song moments that enrich the story in a new emotional and theatrical way.”
It promises to be a sterling couple of years for Disney fans in the West End: Disney’s The Lion King celebrates its 20th anniversary at the Lyceum Theatre this year, and Mary Poppins returns to its original London home, the Prince Edward Theatre, in October. This comes at the conclusion of Disney’s Aladdin run in August.
