Janie Dee will lead the cast of NSFW at the Royal Court, Lucy Kirkwood’s debut play for the acclaimed Sloane Square venue.
Playing from 25 October in the Jerwood Theatre Downstairs, Kirkwood’s ambiguously named comedy stands for Not Safe For Work, referring to the online slang acronym which signals the viewer may not want to be seen accessing the material in a public or formal setting such as work.
Exploring themes including money, sex and Photoshop, NSFW looks at power games and privacy in the media and beyond. While Carrie is getting them out for the lads, Charlotte is just grateful to have a job. Sam is being asked to sell more than his body and Aidan’s trying to keep magazine Doghouse from going under.
Olivier Award-winner Dee, who will take on the role of women’s magazine editor Miranda, was last seen on the London stage in Noises Off at the Old Vic theatre and in the West End. Her other numerous stage credits include Woman In Mind, Shadowlands and Comic Potential in the West End, and Carousel at the National Theatre.
She will be joined in the cast by star of Posh and The Inbetweeners’ Henry Lloyd Hughes, Downton Abbey’s Kevin Doyle, who returns to the venue following his role in Anya Reiss’ debut play Spur Of The Moment, The History Boys’ Sacha Dhawan and Esther Smith, who last appeared at the venue in The Author.
Further casting is still to be announced.
