David Bedella is to play Sweeney Todd in a new production of the Stephen Sondheim musical. The show will be the first in-house show to be produced at the new Twickenham Theatre.
Bedella, who won an Olivier Award for his performance in Jerry Springer The Opera and is well known for his TV role as Dr Carlos Fashola in Holby City, will have Sarah Ingram as his Mrs Lovett. The tale of a butchering barber reunites the two performers, who previously worked together on the Menier Chocolate Factory production of Sondheim’s Road Show.
Running from 10 September to 4 October, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street also stars Mark McKerracher and Zoe Curlett, both of whom have appeared in the West End productions of Les Misérables and The Phantom Of The Opera, as Judge Turpin and the Beggar Woman.
Sondheim’s murderous musical, last seen in the West End in the Olivier Award-winning Chichester Festival Theatre production starring Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton, tells the tale of a wronged barber who wreaks a bloody revenge on London’s stubbled men, delivering their bodies to his pastry-preparing sidekick.
