The Critics’ Circle Theatre Awards 2016 were hosted today, Tuesday 31st January 2017, by the Critics’ Circle Drama Section Chairman Mark Shenton, at the Prince of Wales Theatre, London.
The ceremony was an informal gathering of award recipients, the drama critics, theatre practitioners and the media, convivially coming together to celebrate the critics’ personal choice of the best theatre from throughout the UK during the last calendar year.
Harry Potter And The Cursed Child was the big winner on the day, scoring a hat-trick of awards including Best Director (John Tiffany), Best Designer (Christine Jones) and Most Promising Newcomer (Anthony Boyle).
Best New Play went to the National Theatre’s The Flick, with Best Musical going to The Old Vic’s Groundhog Day, while there was also recognition awarded to Stephen Dillane (Best Actor in Faith Healer), Billie Piper (Best Actress in Yerma) and Glenda Jackson (Best Shakespearean Performance as the titular role in The Old Vic’s King Lear), amongst others.
