Widely acclaimed theatre company Complicite is to bring its sell-out production of The Master And Margarita back to the Barbican theatre for a Christmas season.
The show, which features Satan taking a trip to Communist Moscow intent on wreaking a special kind of hypocrisy-exposing havoc, was a sell-out success when it previously played at the hub for all things artistic earlier this year.
Directed by Complicite founder Simon McBurney, who, when he’s not directing experimental theatre is best known for playing Archdeacon Robert in BBC sitcom Rev or Johannes Burchart in historical drama The Borgias, The Master And Margarita is based on Mikhail Bulgakov’s magical realist novel that took 12 years to write. Its intertwining storylines, leaping from 1930s Russia to Jerusalem during Jesus’ final days, explore themes of love, compassion, corruption and greed.
The production will run at the Barbican from 14 December until 19 January.
The news comes just days before the Olympic Closing Ceremony, which is designed by Es Devlin, who also provides the set design for The Master And Margarita.
