James Clyde, Lisa Davina Phillip and Joshua Wyatt are to join the Royal Shakespeare Company’s hit production of Matilda The Musical later this year, joining Alex Gaumond and Kay Murphy in the cast from 3 September.
Clyde, whose theatre credits include Hamlet at the Young Vic and the National Theatre’s 2011 production of Twelfth Night, will play the title character’s despicable father Mr Wormwood, with Ghost The Musical’s Phillip as librarian Mrs Phelps and newcomer Wyatt as Matilda’s brother Michael.
They will be joined in the Olivier Award-winning production by a host of new cast members including Mike Denman, Juliet Gough, Antony Lawrence, Katie Lee, Antonio Magro, Gary Murphy, David Rudin, Hollie Taylor and Amy Thornton, while Fabian Aloise, Joseph Davenport, Lara Denning, Hayley Flaherty, Madeleine Harland, Joshua Lay and Tommy Sherlock will continue in their current roles.
The critically acclaimed production of Roald Dahl’s much-loved tale about a child with exceptional powers opened at the RSC’s home in Stratford-Upon-Avon in 2012, before transferring to the Cambridge theatre, where it is currently booking until May 2014.
Featuring a book by Dennis Kelly and music by musician and comedian Tim Minchin, Matilda The Musical has since picked up a record-breaking seven accolades at 2012’s Olivier Awards with MasterCard and four Tony Awards after opening on Broadway earlier this year.
