The multi-award winning musical Chicago will return to the West End next Spring, it has been announced, as the acclaimed UK and internationally touring production transfers to London’s Phoenix Theatre from March 2018.
A fresh burst of Razzle Dazzle and All That Jazz will once again light up the West End with the news that the popular musical is returning, 5 and a half years since it last played in London’s Theatreland. Casting for the production at the Phoenix Theatre is to be announced.
Barry Weissler, who, along with his wife Fran, has produced the show in New York, London and around the world, said, “This year we celebrated the production’s 21st Anniversary and had our most successful year to date.
“Chicago is as relevant and timely as the day we opened. After spending the last several years touring throughout the UK it feels like we never really left, but we are thrilled to bring the Razzle Dazzle back to the West End.”
Chicago is based on Maurine Dallas Watkins’ 1926 play of the same name. Set in prohibition Chicago, the show tells the story of two rival performers – and murderesses – locked up in the same County Jail, and satirises corruption within the criminal justice system.
Chicago originally opened in London in November 1997 at the Adelphi Theatre, where it ran for 15 years, making it the West End’s longest running revival. The musical won the 1998 Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Musical Production, as well as the 1998 Critics Circle Drama Award for Best Musical.
Chicago then transferred from the Adelphi Theatre to the Cambridge Theatre in April 2006, where it ran for five years until 27 August 2011, before playing an additional year at the Garrick Theatre, where it ran until 1 September 2012. The show continues to play on Broadway.
Performances for the West End return begin 26 March 2018, with the initial booking period until 30 June 2018.
