Charlie And The Chocolate Factory is the latest London musical to stage a relaxed performance. The extra special sweet-filled show will play on 19 January 2016.
In doing so, the Dahl-icious production follows in the footsteps of Matilda The Musical, Disney’s The Lion King and Mamma Mia!
The specifically created performance, produced in association with Mousetrap Theatre Projects, creates a more relaxed environment for audience members with autism, learning difficulties or other sensory and communication needs.
Changes include adjustments to sound and lighting, subsidised tickets, a relaxed and supportive atmosphere, trained staff on the day and free resources to prepare for the theatre trip in advance.
Speaking about the relaxed performance, Caro Newling of producers Neal Street Productions said: “This relaxed performance of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory is a great opportunity to share the world of this beautiful show with a new audience, and all of us are delighted to be working with Mousetrap Theatre Projects to make it happen.”
Based on Roald Dahl’s much-loved story, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory follows the impoverished Charlie Bucket as his hopes and dreams of winning a golden ticket and exploring the insides of Willy Wonka’s mysterious lair come true.
The production, directed by Skyfall’s Sam Mendes, has been seen by more than 1.5 million theatregoers since opening at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in 2013.
Susan Whiddington, Director of Mousetrap Theatre Projects, commented: “Mousetrap Theatre Projects is thrilled to offer families with young people with special needs the wonderful opportunity to attend a relaxed performance of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory. Over the years, we have had so many requests from families to see this fantastic musical and we know it will be a very special experience for all the families in the auditorium on 19 January.”
