Tony Award nominated actor Charl Brown will join the line-up of performers bringing Motown The Musical to life in London’s West End next year as he reprises his performance as Smokey Robinson in the Broadway import.
Brown, who was recognised at 2013’s prestigious Tony Awards ceremony in the Best Featured Actor in a Musical category for his portrayal of the My Girl singer, will take to the stage of the Shaftesbury Theatre alongside fellow newly announced cast member Sifiso Mazibuko as Marvin Gaye.
While Brown is best known for his appearances in the States, with credits including Broadway productions of Jersey Boys and Sister Act, Mazibuko was most recently seen on stage in Flute Theatre’s The Tempest at the Bloomsbury Theatre Studio.
The duo will play the iconic music legends alongside a previously announced cast that includes Cedric Neal, Lucy St. Louis, Keisha Amponsa Banson, Cindy Belliot, Samuel Edwards, Portia Harry, Aisha Jawando, Joshua Liburd, Simeon Montague, Cleopatra Rey, Brandon Lee Sears, Jordan Shaw and Cherelle Williams.
Motown The Musical, which tells the story of Motown founder Berry Gordy through an incredible back catalogue of the genre’s legendary hits, begins its run in the West End on 11 February.
Currently booking until 22 October, the production is directed by Charles Randolph-Wright and features more than 50 Motown tracks including Ain’t No Mountain High Enough, I’ll Be There, Dancing In The Street, My Girl and I Heard It Through The Grapevine.
The musical opens at the Shaftesbury Theatre following the current run of the altogether different The Illusionists – Witness the Impossible, which is bringing a dose of magic and illusion to the festive season until 3 January.
