Anna Chancellor, Owen Teale and Tom Burke have been confirmed in the cast of the Donmar Warehouse’s autumn production of Creditors.
The experienced trio will be directed by Alan Rickman in David Greig’s new version of Strindberg’s dark comedy of obsession, honour and revenge, which runs from 25 September to 15 November.
Chancellor, possibly best known for her role as Duckface in the genre-defining British romantic comedy Four Weddings And A Funeral, is currently playing Dorothy Macmillan, opposite Jeremy Irons as Harold Macmillan, in the National Theatre production of Never So Good, which runs until 14 August. Her other theatrical performances include Stanley (National), King Lear (RSC) and Boston Marriage (Donmar Warehouse and West End), while on television she has been seen in Spooks, Tipping The Velvet and Pride And Prejudice.
Tony Award-winner Teale has appeared in London productions including Dance Of Death, Ivanov, The Country and A Doll’s House, for which he received a Laurence Olivier Award nomination before the Broadway transfer led to his Tony win. For the Royal Shakespeare Company his credits include The Merchant Of Venice, Julius Caesar and Henry IV pt I.
Burke returns to the Donmar, where he was seen opposite Ian McKellen in the 2006 production of Mark Ravenhill’s The Cut. Around the capital he has also appeared in Glass Eels (Hampstead), Scenes From An Execution (Hackney Empire), Macbeth (Almeida) and Romeo And Juliet (Shakespeare’s Globe).
Strindberg’s Creditors follows Adolf, who seeks solace in the words of a stranger as he awaits the return of his new wife. But comfort is short-lived as old wounds are opened, insecurities are exposed and debts are settled.
Currently playing at the Donmar Warehouse is The Chalk Garden, which opened this week to strong reviews. With a cast boasting Margaret Tyzack, Penelope Wilton, Felicity Jones and Jamie Glover, it tells of an eccentric household where teenager Laurel runs wild. The Chalk Garden runs until 2 August.
