Theatres up and down the country are celebrating the life and work of British Architect Frank Matcham this Sunday on the 100th anniversary of his death. Throughout the 19th and 20th Century, Matcham designed and refurbished over 150 theatres around the United Kingdom. Alan Bennett described him as ‘undoubtedly’ the United Kingdom’s greatest theatrical architect.

You’ll recognize many of his designs around London, including the Hackney Empire, Lyric Hammersmith, London Coliseum, London Palladium , Theatre Royal Stratford East and Victoria Palace Theatre.

Many of the buildings that Matcham designed or rebuilt have been demolished over the last century, but luckily some of his beautiful designs still stand all over the UK.

So though you may be unable to visit any of these historic buildings right now, we’ve got a whirlwind tour of some of Frank Matcham’s most impressive work that you can take from your sofa!

So be sure to follow the hashtag #matcham100 to keep up with what all these beautiful theatres are doing to mark the occasion this weekend!
