A classic Tennessee Williams’ story, Orpheus Descending is all about Lady (played by Hattie), who’s trapped in a loveless marriage, surrounded by intolerant people, living a boring small-town life. But when a wild-eyed charismatic drifter appears, a new life of love and passion suddenly seem possible. Everything will change as the certainty, conformity and tradition are ripped apart.
The story has been adapted for both stage and screen before. This includes a Broadway production in 1957, and a film entitled The Fugitive Kind, which starred iconic actors Marlon Brando and Anna Magnani.
Orpheus Descending will be performed at the Menier Chocolate Factory and is a co-production between them and Theatr Clwyd.
The show will be directed by Theatr Clwyd’s Artistic Director Tamara Harvey, who most recently directed the première of Home I’m Darling, which has been nominated for five Olivier Awards this year, including Best Actress for Katherine Parkinson, Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Susan Brown and Best New Comedy.
Orpheus Descending will run at Theatr Clwyd from 15-27 April, before transferring to the Menier Chocolate Factory for a limited run between 9 May – 6 July 2019. Public booking for the Menier Chocolate Factory dates is now open.
