Jonathan Cullen and Geraldine Alexander will star in the UK premiere of Falk Richter’s drama State Of Emergency when it opens at the Gate theatre in November.
Directed by Maria Aberg, State Of Emergency is a tale of state control and self control, and how the civic dream can turn into an Orwellian nightmare.
A married couple live in what appears to be an ideal neighbourhood, protected from the dangers of the world outside. But what happens when this utopian world becomes a new form of prison?
Cullen, who plays the generically titled Man, has previously appeared in the National Theatre productions of Happy Now?, Market Boy and Albert Speer. He also performed in the Out of Joint/Royal Court co-production Talking To Terrorists and the recent West End production of Equus.
Alexander (Woman) is a regular at Shakespeare’s Globe, where she has appeared in productions including The Tempest, Two Noble Kinsmen, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and 2006’s blood spattered Titus Andronicus. Other credits include Pillars Of The Community (National Theatre), Holy Terror (Duke of York’s theatre) and seasons with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
State Of Emergency opens at the Gate theatre on 11 November, following preview from 6 November, and runs until 13 December.
