Sean Campion will join Sinead Matthews in the cast of Frank Wedekind’s Lulu, staged at the Gate theatre from 10 June as part of its New Directions programme.
Campion is a London stage regular whose recent credits include The Dead School at the Tricycle theatre, Much Ado About Nothing at the Open Air theatre, Berlin Hanover Express at the Hampstead theatre and the hugely successful comedy Stones In His Pockets at the Duke of York’s theatre.
Matthews, who plays the title role, has been seen in The Mandate and Women Of Troy at the National Theatre, The Wild Duck at the Donmar Warehouse and films Nanny McPhee 2, The Boat That Rocked and Vera Drake.
The cast also includes Caroline Faber and Michael Colgan – both recently seen in Headlong’s production of King Lear at the Young Vic – Shakespeare’s Globe regular Paul Copley, and Jack Gordon, whose credits include War Horse, The Miracle and DNA for the National Theatre.
Lulu, Wedekind’s once-banned, provocative play about a femme-fatale skipping from one man to the next, is adapted and directed by this year’s New Directions recipient Anna Ledwich.
Founded in 2008, New Directions was created by the Gate theatre and Rupert Goold’s Headlong theatre company to encourage directorial innovation, bravery and flair by giving the recipient director a four-week platform to present their own interpretation of a classic text on the Gate’s stage.
An Associate Director at Theatre503, Ledwich’s directorial credits include Lovely And Misfit at Trafalgar Studio 2 and Roulette for Finborough theatre. She also assisted Goold on Headlong’s production of Six Characters In Search Of An Author which played in the West End.
