Phew, and that’s a wrap on this year’s Olivier Awards with Mastercard. It’s been an emotional day for everyone; a ceremony full of incredible talent and effort and the first full ceremony we’ve been able to hold for three years.

Speaking of winners, we’re sure you want to know the big news of the night!
The revival of Kander and Ebb musical Cabaret won the most of the night, scooping an impressive seven awards. The production won Magic Radio Best Musical Revival as well as picking up awards for Nick Lidster’s sound design, Rebecca Frecknall’s direction and all four musical acting categories, with wins for Jessie Buckley, Elliot Levey, Liza Sadovy and Eddie Redmayne.
Lolita Chakrabarti’s stage adaptation of Life Of Pi also did incredibly well this year, winning five awards including the coveted Best New Play. Tim Hatley, Nick Barnes and Finn Caldwell won Best Set Design for the constantly transforming set and lifelike puppets used to conjure the story, and Tim Lutkin and Andrzej Goulding won Best Lighting Design. Hiran Abeysekera won Best Actor and in an historic moment, the seven actors who play the Tiger; Fred Davis, Daisy Franks, Romina Hytten, Tom Larkin, Habib Nasib Nader, Tom Stacy and Scarlet Wilderink.
This year’s Mastercard Best New Musical was retro-classic-turned-musical Back To The Future – The Musical, which opened at the Adelphi Theatre in September 2021. Musicals Get Up Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical and Anything Goes both received an Olivier Award Each. Liz Carr won Best Actress in a supporting role for her performance in the National’s A Normal Heart, and Best Actress went to Sheila Atim for her role in Constellations, which also picked up the award for Cunard Best Revival.

The night also saw a performance from Ukrainian mezzo-soprano Kseniia Nikolaieva of the National Anthem of Ukraine, which you can see below:
The evening ended with a touching tribute to Stephen Sondheim, sung by swings, understudies, standbys, and alternates of the West End, who have played a vital role in keeping theatres open during the pandemic, stepping up at the last minute to ensure that performances go on.
