Bugsy Malone returns to Lyric Hammersmith

Published 11 December 2015

The Lyric Hammersmith’s critically acclaimed production of Bugsy Malone will return to London in 2016, playing a second run at the venue from June.

The hugely successful musical hit, which stars a cast of young performers and enjoyed a five-month season earlier this year, will be back entertaining audiences from 11 June.

Set in Prohibition era New York, Alan Parker’s classic musical tells the story of rival gangsters Dandy Dan and Fat Sam, the latter of whom recruits penniless ex-boxer Bugsy Malone to help defend his business. But as custard pies fly, Dan’s destructive splurge guns wreak havoc and Bugsy begins to fall for aspiring singer Blousey Brown, will Bugsy be able to resist the temptation of seductive songstress Tallulah?

Described by The Telegraph’s Dominic Cavendish as “razzmatazz perfection”, the show’s 2015 run saw a host of talented young stars, including Olivier Award winner Eleanor Worthington Cox, take to the Lyric Hammersmith’s stage to portray the tale’s much-loved characters.

Based on the 1976 film of the same name, the musical features music and lyrics by Paul Williams, choreography by Drew McOnie and direction from the venue’s Artistic Director Sean Holmes.

Talking about the musical’s return, Holmes said: “I’m delighted our audience will get a further opportunity to relish Alan Parker’s inspired creation and to be transported by the talent and energy of our young cast.”

Bugsy Malone will return to the Lyric Hammersmith following an exciting season for the venue that includes the first major revival of Simon Stephens’ Herons, the return of 2012’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Lesley Garrett in one of two Royal Opera collaborations. Casting for Bugsy Malone’s 2016 run is yet to be announced.
