Buddy rocks off in Feb 2009

Published 12 November 2008

Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story will end its rocking West End run at the Duchess theatre on 7 February 2009, four days after the 50th anniversary of Buddy Holly’s tragic death.

Buddy, which tells the story of singer/songwriter Holly’s meteoric rise to fame and untimely death in a plane crash, returned to the West End stage in August 2007.

The jukebox musical, which features songs including Peggy Sue, That’ll Be The Day, Oh Boy, Rave On, Heartbeat and Raining In My Heart, first opened in London’s Theatreland at the Victoria Palace theatre in 1989, when it received two Laurence Olivier Award nominations. The production transferred to the Novello theatre in 1995 and finished its original London run in 2002 before heading out on tour.

Speaking about the show’s closure, co-writer and producer Alan Janes said: “We brought the touring production of Buddy into the West End and we’ve had a great year and a half there; but we’re now delighted to be going back out on the road once again to play to all our fans across the UK and Ireland.”
