Boe leads musical celebrations on St George’s Day

Opera star and soon-to-be Les Misérables cast member Alfie Boe is to appear in a musical theatre showcase as part of the Mayor’s celebrations for St George’s Day on 23 April.

Boe will lead a quintet of musical theatre regulars in performing a series of classic show tunes, accompanied by the Rhythm of London orchestra.

The event forms part of a St George’s Day concert held in Trafalgar Square from 12:30 to 18:30 on Saturday 23 April, which will also include performances from musician Newton Faulkner, pop band The Theory Of 6 Degrees and young talent from all over the capital.

Opera tenor and recording artist Boe has worked with the Royal Opera, English National Opera, Welsh National Opera and at festivals all over the world. He has released four albums and, last year, sang the role of Jean Valjean in the 25th anniversary concert performance of Les Misérables at the O2 Arena. He will reprise the role when he joins the original production of the show at the Queen’s theatre from 23 June.

At the St George’s Day concert Boe is joined by musical theatre regulars Matt Rawle (Zorro The Musical, The Three Musketeers), Lara Pulver (Parade), Annalene Beechey (Marguerite) and Tam Mutu (Love Never Dies).

The event, which is free to attend, forms part of Rhythm of London, an annual showcase of young musical talent organised by the Mayor of London.

Mayor Boris Johnson commented: “On St George’s Day, we celebrate the fantastic talent and creativity that make this such a wonderfully exciting place to live, not just London, but the country as a whole. And as the nation prepares for the most momentous occasion of the year, we are putting on a joyous and inspirational free event to help get everyone in the mood. So have a full English and head down to Trafalgar Square.”
