Olivier Award nominated actor Billie Piper will make her Young Vic debut this summer in Simon Stone’s contemporary update of Federico García Lorca’s masterpiece Yerma.

The star will lead the cast of acclaimed Australian theatremaker Stone’s production from 28 July, with further casting to be announced.

Described as one of Spanish playwright Lorca’s greatest works, Yerma tells the story of a woman whose fierce desire to be a mother is met with painful indifference by her husband, provoking a desperate reaction.

Piper will take on the title role, marking her first return to the stage following her high profile starring role in the National Theatre’s surprise comedy Great Britain, the production that was famously only announced a few days prior to its first performances.

The much loved British actor, who went from teen pop star to Doctor Who icon, has carved out a respected career on stage, earning an Olivier Award nomination for her role in the National Theatre’s The Effect and appearing in the Almeida’s acclaimed Reasons To Be Pretty.

Alongside the news that the Secret Dairy Of A Call Girl star will lead the cast, the Young Vic also announced it has extended the show’s run by two weeks and is now booking to 24 September.

Yerma will play as part of an exciting summer season for the Waterloo venue that includes topical drama Cuttin’ It, a modern retelling of Euripides’ Trojan Women, Queens Of Syria, and a revival of Joe Penhall’s Olivier Award-winning psychological drama Blue/Orange.
