A production of Roald Dahl’s The BFG is to be the Christmas show in the main house of Polka theatre this year, running from 9 November-9 February.
The BFG tells the story of young Sophie (whom Dahl based on his granddaughter, Sophie Dahl), who befriends a Big Friendly Giant. Using David Wood’s adaptation of Dahl’s classic children’s story, Polka brings the characters to life using music, masks, puppets and actors, in a production suitable for children over six and their families.
The show is directed by Polka Associate Director Roman Stefanski, who honed his puppetry skills on 80s satire Spitting Image, and created by the team behind Polka’s 2004 production of another Dahl classic, James And The Giant Peach.
Meanwhile this Christmas, kids under five can be entertained in the Adventure Theatre by a puppet-based production of Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy story Princess And The Pea. Created by Banyan Theatre’s Joy Haynes, the show uses inventive transformations of everyday objects, projection and puppetry to tell the story of a clever queen, a girl who is not as she first appears and a tiny pea. Princess And The Pea runs from 21 November-22 February.
