Bard restored to Leicester Square

First Published 24 September 2013, Last Updated 24 September 2013

A Grade II listed sculpture of William Shakespeare has been returned to the heart of Leicester Square following 11 months of restoration work.

The artwork, the only outdoor statue of the great playwright in central London, was reopened in the heart of the iconic London location by deputy leader of Westminster City Council, Robert Davis.

The statue, which was designed by James Knowles and bears the inscription “There is no darkness but ignorance” from Twelfth Night, had been a feature of the thoroughfare for 140 years.

Following the restoration work carried out by Westminster City Council and specialist company PAYE, the great creator of theatre can now been seen in all his glory just yards from one of London’s most iconic theatrical landmarks, our award-winning TKTS booth, which has been providing theatregoers with great on the day deals, advanced ticket sales and outstanding service since 1980.

You can see images of the reopening above, or head down to Leicester Square to see the statue in all its glory and pick up some fantastic tickets from TKTS.
