Theresa Ikoko’s multi award-winning kidnapping drama Girls will receive its London premiere at the Soho Theatre this autumn.
Having scooped the Alfred Fagon Award in 2015 and the George Devine Award earlier this year, as well as being shortlisted for Soho Theatre’s Verity Bargate Award, Ikoko’s fiercely passionate and darkly comic tale of an abducted trio of best friends is inspired by the playwright’s frustration with selective media coverage of such violence within world conflict zones.
Focusing on three everyday girls with three big, typical issues – love, sex, and religion – their kidnapping suddenly leads to the blurring of their hope and despair, their jokes and fights, and a battle for survival. As their enduring friendship is placed under duress, the headline to their story threatens to quickly become yesterday’s news.
The harrowing drama will premiere at HighTide Festival in the autumn before receiving its London premiere at the Soho Theatre on 27 September. Running until 29 October, tickets are available from the venue’s website.
