The winners of the 2007 if.comedy Awards, handed out at the Edinburgh Festival, will be performing at the Garrick in October, along with a collection of the nominees.
Controversial Australian comic Brendon Burns, who won the prestigious if.comedy Award this year, performs his show So I Suppose This Is Offensive Now on 7 October. Burns, who famously walked out of the reality TV show I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here Now live on air, is joined by Andrew Lawrence. Lawrence was nominated last year for the Best Newcomer Award, and was nominated for the if.comedy Award this year for his show Social Leprosy For Beginners And Improvers, which he performs at the Garrick.
They are followed on 14 October by two nominees, Andrew Maxwell and sketch comedy troupe Pappy’s Fun Club. Maxwell, who performs his new show Waxin’, won the Channel 4 King Of Comedy show in 2004. The Irish comedian has been performing since 1992 and hosts a weekly late night comedy show, Fullmooners, in London. Pappy’s Fun Club made their debut performance in Edinburgh in 2006 and have been performing on the London comedy circuit since then. Their Edinburgh show this year won rave reviews for its charm and frothy weirdness.
The last show comes on 21 October, when Best Newcomer Award winner Tom Basden is joined by Tom Binns, who performs his first full-length show, Ivan Brackenbury’s Hospital Radio Roadshow. First heard on the Stewart Lee and Richard Herring Radio 1 show Fist Of Fun, the Hospital Radio show is a tactless hour of dedicating inappropriate songs to hospital patients. Basden’s show, Won’t Say Anything, features him refusing to talk at all, instead singing songs and showing pictures and one-minute films.
Also featured at the Garrick from 8 to 27 October is veteran comedian Arthur Smith’s art exhibition ARTURART. The collection of Smith’s paintings, embroideries, t-shirts and odd bits and pieces, together with contributions from other comedians such as Harry Hill, Janey Godley, Jo Brand and Simon Munnery, was presented with a special if.comedy Panel Prize for its originality and wit. The exhibition is open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 11:00 to 18:00, Thursdays and Saturdays from 11:00 to 13:00, and on Sundays from 14:00 to 18:00, and entry is free.
