The puppet residents of Avenue Q will be living in the West End for a while longer, as the cult musical extends its stay at the Noël Coward until 28 September 2008. It had been booking until January.
The original production of Avenue Q was a hit both off and on Broadway when it premiered in New York in 2003. The London production opened in June 2006 and picked up a Laurence Olivier Award nomination for Best New Musical earlier this year.
Featuring a cast of actors and puppets, the comedy musical follows the fortunes of Princeton, a college graduate trying to find his way in life. Renting a room on Avenue Q, he meets an assortment of furry neighbours including love interest Kate Monster, the porn-loving Trekkie Monster and Lucy The Slut. Together they address a number of serious issues through songs entitled The Internet Is For Porn, Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist and If You Were Gay.
The current cast includes original London cast members Jon Robyns (Princeton), Julie Atherton (Kate Monster and Lucy The Slut), Simon Lipkin (Nicky and Trekkie Monster) and Siôn Lloyd (Brian), plus Mary Doherty (Mrs Thistletwat), Jennifer Tanarez (Christmas Eve) and Delroy Atkinson (Gary).
Avenue Q is written by Robert Lopez, Jeff Marx and Jeff Whitty and directed by Jason Moore.
