Sam Mendes’ take on Roald Dahl’s much loved children’s story is confection perfection. The tale of a reclusive chocolate-making mastermind Willy Wonka, his iconic factory and golden ticket winner Charlie may need no introduction, but never before was Wonka’s world of fantastical flavours, mouth-watering wonders, tasty terrors and those all-important Oompa Loompas etched into our imagination as vividly as after experiencing Mendes’ techicolour vision.
As a result of this brilliance, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory is no stranger to Olivier Awards success, proving itself a Smartie when it was Boosted by seven nominations in 2014 following its world premiere in 2013. It went home with a Double Decker win, picking up the awards for Best Lighting Design and Best Costume Design. Which means, as all you quick with numbers will know, a Magic Radio Audience Award win this year would take the show to a Trio (Triiiiiooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhh …) of wins.
We spoke to Charlie And The Chocolate Factory’s very own Willy Wonka, Jonathan Slinger, to find out how he feels about the show and being in the running for the Magic Radio Audience Award.
Charlie And The Chocolate Factory is booking at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane to 7 January. You can book tickets through us here.
