The Golden Voice, a new talent show-set musical by singer-songwriter Nick Fogarty, will premiere at the Arts theatre this June.
Playing from 19 June until 31 August, Fogarty’s story, which is the latest in a new trend for TV contest-themed musicals following Viva Forever! and Harry Hill’s forthcoming comedy take on the genre, X Factor – It’s Time To Face The Musical, tells the cautionary tale of fame hungry singer Mike Chariot who betrays his best friend and abandons his childhood sweetheart to win the nation’s favourite talent show The Golden Voice.
When he realises he is merely a puppet for the record company and television executives, Chariot chooses to disappear rather than attempt to return to his old life. After a brief media frenzy, the machine moves on and he is all but forgotten. Almost 20 years on, the singer returns to make amends and help young singers and musicians achieve their dreams without having to enter television talent shows. But not everyone is so keen to forgive and forget and when he comes back into contact with his embittered former best friend, revenge is on the cards.
While this may be Fogarty’s musical theatre debut, he is no stranger to the genre having worked as a vocal coach for stage stars including Hairspray’s Olivier Award-winning Leanne Jones. After starting his career as part of British band Academy, Fogarty retired from the lime light in 1991 to write and produce for artists including David Hasselhoff and boasts more than 60 record releases as a writer and artist.
Joining Fogarty, who has written the music, lyrics and book for The Golden Voice, in the creative team are director Guy Retallack and choreographer Jordi Guitart. Casting is yet to be announced.
