Sherlock actress Amanda Abbington has been announced for the UK premiere of Florian Zeller’s The Son.
Recently known for her portrayal of Mary Morstan in BBC’s Sherlock, Amanda has treaded the West End boards many times before. Her credits include The God of Carnage (Theatre Royal Bath), A Little Princess (Royal Festival Hall), Abigail’s Party (Theatre Royal Bath/UK Tour), God Bless This Child (Royal Court), Love Me Tonight (Hampstead Theatre) and The Safari Party (Stephen Joseph Theatre /Hampstead Theatre).
Performing at the newly refurbished Kiln Theatre, the full cast of Florian Zeller’s The Son are; Amanda Abbington (Anne), Laurie Kynaston (Nicolas), John Light (Pierre), Oseloka Obi (Nurse), Amaka Okafor (Sofia), and Martin Turner (The Doctor).
The cast will be directed by Michael Longhurst, whose most recent work is still on the West End, the revival of Caroline, Or Change at the Playhouse Theatre.
The play centres on a family breakdown, and the effect it has on teenager Nicolas. He’s skipping school, lying to the family and hiding odd objects under his bed. Are there warning signs the family is missing or is he just a typical teenager?
Completing a trilogy of plays, The Son follows on from the Olivier Award-winning The Father, and the critically-acclaimed The Mother. An eagerly anticipated show, The Son has already been nominated for 9 Molière awards including Best Play in a Commercial Theatre and Best Playwright.
The Son has been translated from French into English by Christopher Hampton, who has previously translated Florian’s work, as well as work by Ibsen, Molière and Chekhov. He’s also adapted stories for the big screen, including Atonement and his own play, Dangerous Liaisons.
That’s not the only première going on at the Kiln Theatre either, as this is the fourth première being performed in their opening season.
The Son will run from the 20 February until 6 April 2019. Tickets are available on the theatre’s website.
