Robert Icke’s critically acclaimed adaptation of Mary Stuart, which sees Juliet Stevenson and Lia Williams alternate the play’s central roles through a coin toss, will transfer to the West End in January 2018.
Having won critical acclaim and sell-out audiences at the Almeida earlier this year, the production will transfer to the Duke of York’s Theatre from Saturday 13 January for a limited run until Saturday 31 March, before departing for a UK tour.
Friedrich Schiller’s Mary Stuart centres on two queens – one in power, the other in prison.
The political tragedy takes us behind the scenes of some of British history’s most crucial days, with Stevenson (Hamlet, West End) and Lia Williams (Oresteia, West End) trading the play’s central roles based on the result of a coin toss at each performance.
Robert Icke previously directed Hamlet, Uncle Vanya, Oresteia, Mr Burns and 1984 for the Almeida, and The Red Barn for the National Theatre. Mary Stuart is produced by Fiery Angel (Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company – Plays at the Garrick, The 39 Steps) and the Almeida (London Theatre of the year 2016 – Hamlet, Bakkhai, Richard III, American Psycho, King Charles III, Oil and Chimerica).
