Artistic director Rupert Goold has announced the Ameida Theatre’s Spring 2020 season.
The season will include:
The return of Doctor Foster writer Mike Bartlett’s play Albion, with Victoria Hamilton (The Crown, Doctor Foster) reprising her award-winning performance. Inspired by Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard, Albion follow’s Aubrey (Victoria Hamilton) in her attempts to restore her crumbling, once-grand country house while the chaos of her family relationships swirl around her. The play is set in an exquisite garden set designed by Miriam Buether.
The UK premiere of Jeremy O. Harris’ Daddy. When young black artist, Franklin. meets older white art collector. Andre, their relationship develops intensely. When Franklin’s religious mother begins to grow suspicious, she and Andre enter into a battle of wills over Franklin. Daddy is directed by Danya Taymor, who directed Ronald Peet, Charlayne Woodward and Alan Cumming in the Vineyard Theatre, New York, production earlier this year.
The world premiere of The House Of Shades by Beth Steel (Wonderland). Directed by Blanche McIntyre (The Writer), the story follows the lives and deaths of three generations of the Webster family over five decades. Set against a constantly shifting landscape of working-class, industrial Britain, this play explores the huge political and social change across half a century through one family’s story.

The Almeida also announced the launch of the Genesis Almeida New Playwrights, Big Plays Programme. The scheme will support emerging and mid-career writers to develop their plays for larger stages each year. The The Genesis Almeida Writers for 2019/20are Kendall Feaver, Sami Ibrahim, Charley Miles, Amy Ng, Iman Qureshi, Sam Steiner and Ross Willis. Each of these will be commissioned to develop one new play and will be given dramaturgical support from the Almeida’s Literary Manager and artistic team. The programme is supported by the Genesis Foundation, which funds programmes that support the career development of directors, playwrights, actors and musicians.
