There may still be a few hours wait until Disney’s Aladdin makes its West End debut, but the Broadway hit is already set for success, announcing it has extended its London run into 2017.
Ahead of its first performance at the Prince Edward Theatre tonight, the spectacular stage adaptation of Disney’s hit film has added a further four months to its run, extending to 11 February.
Featuring all of Alan Menken’s classic songs from the 1992 film, as well as new tunes written by the eight-time Academy Award winner, Aladdin tells the famous story of the titular street urchin who falls for a princess, is swindled by an evil sorcerer and has his life changed immeasurably when he stumbles across a wish-granting genie.
London theatre fans now have longer to catch Tony and Olivier Award-winning director and choreographer Casey Nicholaw’s Whole New World of magic, romance, friendship and adventure as The Book Of Mormon director gets set to replicate the show’s huge New York success on this side of the pond.
Audiences will be treated to a touch of Broadway in the West End premiere, as former NY cast member Trevor Dion Nicholas gets set to make his London debut as the show’s Genie alongside Dean John-Wilson and Jade Ewen as the show’s heroes Aladdin and Jasmine.
The company will be well prepared for their first performance tonight following a staggering 315 hours of rehearsals. Their performances will be given extra sparkle with 68 tonnes of scenery and 337 custom-designed costumes ready to dazzle, not least due to the millions of Swarovski crystals that have been used in their creation.
Disney’s Aladdin will be hoping to cast its magic over critics when the show officially opens on 15 June after a fortnight of previews.
